Founded
in 1856 due to its key location along the Big Sioux River valley
and the Great Plains prairie, the Sioux Falls area is now the fastest
growing community in both South Dakota and the Midwest. Sioux Falls’
slogan, “The Best Little City in America,” embodies the benefits
of both an urban and rural setting. Since the late 1970s, the Sioux
Falls area has experienced a positive transformation from an industrial
economy centered on meatpacking and stockyards to a diverse service-based
economy with strong finance, retail, and health care sectors. The
Sioux Falls metropolitan area encompasses four counties: Lincoln,
McCook, Minnehaha, and Turner.
The
Sioux Falls area has made some significant progress in becoming
more of a destination of choice for firms and individuals. The
community has experienced healthy population growth for the
last three decades and its residents enjoy a higher standard
of living than found in many regional counterpart cities. The
region has also appeared on a number of “best places” lists
published by national magazines.
